PM says Health Minister has no apology to make about neonatal deaths

Dean Barrow

The death of thirteen newborns at the K.H.M.H. in the month of May and the deadly bacteria outbreak in the neonatal intensive care unit is another big issue which is unresolved. An issue of this magnitude would at least invite a comment from the Minister of Health, Pablo Marin…but so far he has been mum on the matter. He was, in fact, at a press conference at the K.H.M.H. held at the end of May, but he did not speak. Today we asked PM Barrow if there is a lack of confidence in his Minister of Health and we were amazed by his response as he stated most vehemently that Marin has no apology to make.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I was at that press conference. I’m having a press conference; there are three ministers, four ministers here—it is good to welcome Santi back after his accident—and they don’t speak. Two things: I imagine, well not imagine…he told me. He said sir, if you will make a statement then I don’t need to make one. I don’t think that you should talk about there being a lack of confidence you know. Let me tell you something. You give me a chance now to say that this Sunday is the last Sunday in the 2013 village council elections. Every single Sunday, the U.D.P. has been recording massive victories. We are now at a point where we are sixty-seven point seven percent of the seats we have won. In 2010, we had won fifty-four. How is this relevant? Pablo Marin, the Minister of Health, who represents the Corozal Bay constituency took over for purposes of the village council elections, the Corozal South West constituency. He was the one who went out there and organized the part and he has won every single one of those villages. I don’t think such a man would have any lack of confidence…not where it matters. The people obviously have great regards for him, complete faith in him and I don’t think he has any apologies to make. He need not make any apologies for not speaking at that press conference because his leader and his prime minister was making a statement.”

You will note that in his recitation of village council results, the Prime Minister stated that Marin need not worry about ‘a lack of confidence,’…at least not where it really counts. Later on, the Prime Minister indicated that more than one person is expected to resign once the investigation on the deaths is completed. And from what we understand one person has resigned, but that it is not related to the neonatal deaths.

You have to know Barrow from his early years at Michael’s to understand how despicable and unconscionable his thoughts are on humanity and why his current behavior and utterances are totally in character. Let’s hope when we change his government , we charge him and the people with him with high crimes and punish them pursuant to the relevant laws.

Its a shame that the PM has to speak for those who cant do their job. If the minister of Health is so incompetent where he cant even open up his trap to even give words of condolences to those parents then i guess he is doing his job well. I dont hold him in great regards PM so dont talk for everyone if you dont even known.

  9. WOW says:

Did he just say Marin has confidence where it matters?? so 13 babies dying does not matter to our Prime Minister? I have heard stories of him being cold, vindictive, personal, petty, but this one is a new low..

  10. Hi5 says:

    Dean Barrow’s a joke.

  11. venus says:

The PM is telling us that the role of bringing in the village council is more important to the party than the health of a nation. I have heard him personally saying that a former PM does not have blood in his vain when he did the massive retrenchment, guest he learns from a good teacher.

  12. Belizean Pride says:

WTH damn!!! world this is our PM and this is how Belize is going through no wonder we can’t come out from the third world level but we are going down to fourth world country level. I have no idea what to do for election since both parties are the same so any ideas peeps, it’s hard to have to say the reality but neither party is better than the each other. one party knows how to hide their corruptions while the next one has the full audacity to make it public, jeezzz.

  13. Disgusted says:

“At least not where it really counts….” Sighhhhh…… Guess where it really counts is the countless land matters that take up his entire day at the health ministry and driving around in ministry assigned vehicles (other than his assigned vehicle) while staff are left stranded not being able to attend meetings or do other related work because of lack of appropriate transportation.

  14. concerned says:

How much more babies are worth for an apology of the minister of health, 13 more?Northern Regional scandal and then this.
