Upgrades pending for the K.H.M.H.

Pablo Marin

Back on May thirtieth when the deaths of the neonates was first acknowledged by the K.H.M.H., the Prime Minister, who was at a press conference, committed government finances saying he would also seek funds from international donors to build a new ward to house the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. On Wednesday, the Minister of Health briefed the media on projects that would improve the K.H.M.H. as well as the Central Medical Laboratory.

Pablo Marin, Minister of Health

“Let me list a few of the things I have been organizing over the last few weeks. The government, through my ministry, is making available one hundred and fifty thousand for urgent renovation to the existing neonatal intensive care unit here at K.H.M.H. The government, through my ministry, is immediately investing over eighty thousand to train nurses in safe intravenous therapy and access to sexual and reproductive health service. We have also identified an additional five hundred thousand to support the ongoing construction of the new pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit. The government, through my ministry, is making available three hundred thousand for the renovation of middle floor of the Central Medical Laboratory. The government, through the ministry and UNDP is making available eighty thousand for renovation to the ground floor of the Central Medical Laboratory. In all our public hospitals, we have initiated reviews of all the infection control procedures and additional training opportunities to our doctors and nurses. Last week, the C.E.O. and myself met with the new Secretario de Salud of Quintana Roo, Doctor Juan Lorenzo Ortega Pacheco, to negotiate arrangements for access to oncology services for our the pediatric oncology center in Chetumal and to initiate support for our laboratory service and for biomedical engineers and maintenance services. We will be following up with their team again next week. I want to assure to the public that our doctors and nurses are working hard and will always do their best for us to have the best health system in the country. and to have our Belizean people…to have a healthy lifestyle.”

In spite of all the upgrades that will reach the K.H.M.H. in the future,  it is now up to the hospital’s board of governors to pronounce judgement if anyone is culpable for the inefficiencies that were identified in the PAHO report.
