Attorney for medical facility dispels allegation of malpractice

The grieving family has made serious allegations of malpractice against the doctors from the Northern Medical Plaza who treated baby Dulce. Those allegations have caught fire in certain sections of the media. And they have resulted in those doctors seeking immediate legal counsel. In a release issued today, the medical facility refutes any claim that the doctors didn’t do anything wrong. That release points to the serious condition of the child when she was brought in for treatment, and insists that she received the highest quality of health care, but was just too critically ill. News Five tried to speak to those doctors today, but we were directed to attorney Marcel Cardona for comment.

“At the moment when this child arrived at the Northern Medical Specialty Plaza for medical treatment, this child was one; already in a very weakened medical condition. It is my understanding from information provided by my clients that the child had already been receiving medical treatment elsewhere for during the period of one week and when it was realized that the child was not responding to this medical treatment, the child was then transferred over to my clients’ medical facility in Orange Walk. At that medical facility, the team of medical doctors and nurses did everything humanly possible; everything strictly in accordance with the norms practices and procedures of the medical profession in Belize to try to save the life of this child. Unfortunately, as you I am sure would agree with me, life is not guaranteed to anyone; in particular those receiving medical care and treatment and in particular some form of surgical treatment as took place in this situation. Importantly, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that my clients did anything wrong or anything that they should not have done. In fact I am reliably informed that following the surgical procedure carried out at my clients’ facility, an independent radio diagnostic testing, test results indicated that there was absolutely no foreign body as has been alleged in the media within the body of this child. And my clients are accordingly confident that they have done nothing out of the ordinary; they have done nothing to conflict with the norms and practices and procedures of the medical profession in Belize and elsewhere.”

Late this evening, Cardona contacted News Five to report that his clients have received verification from the K.H.M.H. that no object was left inside baby Dulce during the surgeries at Northern Medical Plaza. We note that we have been able to receive no such verification because when we checked we were told that the K.H.M.H. had no comment on the matter.
